What makes Old Works such a unique course?

There are several reasons Old Works is so unique. It is the first and only course built on a Federal EPA Superfund site. It is the only Jack Nicklaus signature course in the state of Montana, the course is owned by Anaconda Deer-Lodge County making it one of only a handful of Nicklaus signature publicly owned golf courses. The course incorporates many elements from Anaconda's historic copper smelter on site including black slag in all of the courses bunkers, making for a stunning contrast to white bunker sand found on most other golf courses.

What are your rates for golf?

The rates vary depending on the season but the course was recognized as one of the best new affordable courses by Golf Digest magazine in 1998. What lead to the decision to allow carts off paths in 2006?

Over the years the number one concern we've heard from players from surveys returned was their inability to drive carts to thier ball in the fairway.  They also mentioned that this was the number one reason they do not play more here at Old Works.  In order to increase rounds and to add to the players experience we will be allowing carts to access  the fairway complex's from May 1 through October 14, while the turf is healthy and growing.  this change will also assist us in achieving a better pace of play, another challenge mentioned often in surveys.

At the same time we are very aware that the condition of the course is one of the main reasons Old Works has developed the reputation as one of the best values and places to play.  We intend to work diligently to maintain the turf and playing surfaces to a level that players have come to expect when visiting Old Works.  The overall goal will be to increase the players enjoyment and improving pace of play, while at the same time maintaining the best conditions possible for the dollar paid.

How is the black sand to play from?

The slag a by-product of the copper smelting process is fairly easy to play from. The material is fairly dense and therefore very seldom will you get a ball to plug or bury. We recommend that when playing here a sandwedge with little bounce would be preferable. A typical greenside bunker shot should be played taking a bit less sand and being firm down and through the shot.

If we decided to play more than 18 holes do you have a day rate?

We currently do not have a day rate. If your group books two tee times when you make your reservation you would pay regular rates for both tee times. If you booked only one tee time and upon completion of play you would like to play another round, and a tee time is available, we would charge you our current twilight rate for that second round.

We plan on coming to play your course and we are traveling in an RV do you allow overnight parking at the course?

We do not allow any overnight parking at Old Works, however, we do have two RV parks within minutes of the golf course.
One is Big Sky RV Park, 406 / 563-2967, pam-red@msn.com, they are a couple of blocks from the Old Works entrance. The other is Fairmont RV Park, 406 / 797-3505, rvfairmont@juno.com, about 15 minutes from the golf course.
